Review: (#1-#3, C+) Taking three scenes from the film and putting them onto a poster is a cheap ploy and the lettering is cheap looking. Still, they tell the viewer who’s in film and that helps more than it hinders. (#4-#6, C) A tepid group of character posters that might appeal to fans of individual actors but have no visually style or flair.

(#10, C+) You have to make sure Leonardo DiCaprio is the most important part of your design but while suggesting there are other people in it. This blends elements from the film well but doesn’t have any creative energy. (#11, B-) It’s always nice to see a stacked visage design but this is one of the weaker of such efforts. Limited details, including the background and faces that are almost too indistinct makes the whole effort look wasted. (#12, C) The long, empty road motif might have a symbolism within the film itself but for the posters, it’s a dull aesthetic that is poorly forced into too many designs.

Trailer Rating: C- / C+ / B-

Review: (#1, C-) This ham-fisted tease wants the audience to be excited for the new Paul Thomas Anderson film but doesn’t provide anything of value to excite them for the future trailer release.

(#2, C+) The humor in the trailer almost suggests a comedy but the content doesn’t quite affirm that impression. The premise is a bit amorphous and apart from interest in the film’s stars, there isn’t much to this poster that will excite viewers.

(#3, B-) Now that we get a glimpse of the plot of the film, it looks far more engrossing and exciting. The off-beat humor doesn’t work that well and the paranoid undertone creates more anxiety than enticement but it’s a solid third effort.

Oscar Prospects:

Paul Thomas Anderson’s films are always a good bet for nominations.
