Review: (#1, C+) A lot of empty space with none of it used well. The Springsteen figure is hardly recognizable, which might explain why they decided to add his name to the title to make it more obvious.

(#2-#5, C) While the first looks to be the final design for the film and the remaining three are all specific to individual formats/ticket venues, the designs are fairly similar, giving the same figure in various performance-related poses and with none of them giving something unique to the background detail to make them stand apart. While I gave the first design credit for at least getting into an iconic pose, these do little of interest with that concept.

Trailer Rating: C+ / B- / B

Review: (#1, C+) One of the things that charms people most about Bruce Springsteen is his naturalistic charm. That charm doesn’t come through very well even if Jeremy Allen White does a suitable impression of the singer. It doesn’t give one much hope that the film can be any better than Crazy Heart, which was little without its compelling central performance. This sadly looks similar.

(#2, B-) Although it paints Springsteen as a haunted and complex figure, which is appealing, it also fails to present a film that looks anything more than hopelessly generic. Familiar framing devices, limited rooting interest, and a lethargic pace dampen its ability to sell the film beyond Springsteen’s legion of fans.

(#3, B) If you never want to watch the movie, then you’ve gotten a good glimpse into it with this trailer and probably don’t need to sit through it. Giving away too much often leads to issues but this is a public figure in a formulaic-looking biopic so there’s little that needs to be done to sell it and little to be seen that will dissuade already curious figures and it might even make his fans more excited.

Oscar Prospects:

Scott Cooper has struggled to breakthrough with the Academy. This could finally be his way in following a music icon. Biopics are catnip for the Academy and I don’t see how this doesn’t score some nominations.
