Review: (#1, B-) The use of the tagline “Be afraid…” and having all of the monsters looking frightened of the main character makes some sort of diabolical sense but doesn’t quite convey the childlike wonder the film is intended to evoke. (#2, C) Staid, almost unmoving design that breaks the poster into three columns that look cheaply affected and doesn’t exactly entice viewers. (#3, C+) In terms of balance, this design does pretty well, giving the passer-by a decent amount of details to stop and review. Unfortunately, those details aren’t exactly inspirational and it almost looks like a knock-off version of Hotel Transylvania, which isn’t exactly a draw.

Trailer Rating: C / C

Review: (#1, C) Familiar monsters-as-people tropes, a bare resemblance to Monsters, Inc., and some underwhelming computer animation, this trailer tries to find a way to make the narrative exciting and the most it can accomplish is appeal to very young children who aren’t particularly interested to artistic originality.

(#2, C) The first trailer failed to sell the movie and this one does little to improve that. The story gets a new perspective, mostly the angry mob segment of the film but the more one sees, the more it resembles so many other better movies out there. It also feels like a Hotel Transylvania/Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio fanfic.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
