Review: (#1, C) The motion blur lines, even when done in the traditional colors of Superman, don’t add enough interest to this design. It only serves to distract from the lack of detail in this teaser design. We’ll hope for something more rich and interesting closer to the film’s release.

(#2, C+) Better than the prior design, this effort at least gets us the titular character to look at. Unfortunately, it’s blurred-motion aesthetic is poorly used and doesn’t add to the design one bit.

(#3, C+) This seems like it should be one of a series of poster designs with Superman overlooking big cities but it seems to be the only one I’ve seen available so far. It’s odd because Clark Kent grew up in Kansas and makes his home in New York City, neither of which are related to St. Louis, Mo. It’s an interesting idea nonetheless. (#4-#20, C) The ugly color motif of the motion blur lines of the first poster are poorly utilized in these character posters which have a lot of characters available and variance in the details but all blur together so easily as to be useless. (#21 & #24, C+; #22-#23 & #25, C) An array of theatrical format designs that are all distinctive from each other but not terribly appealing. Some are slightly better than others but nothing is terribly remarkable.

(#26, B-) Harkening back to the original Christopher Reeve Superman film, this poster may be a nice pastiche but it’s somewhat dull. (#28, B+) Another design that reminds of the Superman films of the 1970s and 1980s, this has less wasted space and lots of character details but still struggles to find a way to feel complete. (#28, C+) Choosing a different color scheme than most of the other designs, this one is striking in a way but more generally quite dull.

Trailer Rating: B- / B+ / B-

Review: (#1, B-) The original John Williams Superman theme might have had more impact were it a little more obvious. You can pick it out briefly but it doesn’t do much in the way of excitement, especially when distracted by the visuals which are admittedly profuse but lacking in direction. The viewer doesn’t know what’s going on and outside of character/brand loyalty, there’s nothing to engage with here.

(#2, B+) Bringing the audience into the narrative with a trailer that has some excitement and intrigue makes this one of the better summer movie trailers of recent vintage. There’s plenty of motion, humor, and peril on display to excite even reticent reboot-frustrated fans.

(#3, B-) These trailers continue to accentuate the heroic nature of Superman more so than prior filmic efforts but there’s also the issue that this version of Lex Luther isn’t nearly as compelling a villain as we would have hoped.

Oscar Prospects:

It could well capture some craft nominations such as Sound and Visual Effects.
