Review: (#1, C+) An interesting use of negative space to create an image of what is likely some sort of demon. The color scheme is oppressive and overused while the character screaming is indistinct and surprisingly lifeless.

(#2, C) A poorly framed, bland expression of action and conviction that feels falsely affected.

(#3, B+) It’s a challenge for horror films to stand out with their poster designs. Most designers are so stuck in common color schemes and layouts, they forget the ability to be inventive. This one is not perfect. It still hews closely to the palettes viewers are familiar with but blending in the cracked mirror and the red visage theming into the film’s premise is an effective use of creativity. (#4, C) While this one also doesn’t look like all other horror designs, it doesn’t really do anything original or interesting either.

(#5, C+) The statuary aren’t the only cloying things about this design. The black-and-white effort is performative nonsense with the embellishment of red feeling hackneyed. (#6, C+) The black-red-and-white aesthetic is pointlessly attributed in this lackluster and underwhelming IMAX design.

Trailer Rating: C+ / B- / B

Review: (#1, C+) Still leaning on that “true” element of the Warrens’ case files (all shams by the way), this trailer can’t help but lean into all its most interesting visual elements. The sink of blood, the haunting children’s toys, it all seems overly familiar and bountiful without being entirely interesting.

(#2, B-) If you’re already a fan of this series, the trailer will definitely capture your interest. It’s a greatest hits of all predecessors. The problem is that there’s just nothing to be seen. These are familiar moments told in familiar fashion with a narrative that doesn’t seem to do anything other than suggest this will be the last film in the series. If fans are underwhelmed, that might be the case but this trailer is only going to do so much lifting in getting them excited in familiar tropes and concepts.

(#3, B) As annoyed as I am with this series, especially the lauding of hucksters who specifically ensured nothing negative about the Warrens is included in the films doesn’t exempt the trailers from looking more fun than they should be. It’s all familiar and overused material but it will certainly appeal to the series’ fans.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
