Review: (#1, C+) Too much wasted space with this design and while the title coloring matches up to the titular secret agent in the photo, the overall design lacks intrigue or passion. (#2, C) Black-and-white designs seldom evoke a sense of energy and this looks like a haphazard attempt to turn a weak 1970s poster design into a modernist reimagining. It doesn’t work. (#3, C) The purpose of the red phone, outside of accentuating its presence, doesn’t quite make sense and the end result is another unappealing use of black-and-white for effect. You would be forgiven for mistaking this for a horror film design.

(#4, C+) It is a limited design with few background affectations but its visual homage to poster designs for 1960s films gives it a measure of intrigue it might not have otherwise had. (#5, C) A scene from the film rarely provides adequate intrigue for a poster design and this exemplifies that. Plastering the background with other characters from the film might have added some variance or at least created some sense of energy.

Trailer Rating: B- / B-

Review: (#1, B-) For a trailer that doesn’t do the best job of putting for the narrative of the film, it’s surprisingly effective at creating a sense of urgency and mystery. It looks to be a thriller for fans of independent cinema rather than those who love spy thrillers as a rule.

(#2, B-) The premise doesn’t get better explained in the second trailer although it does add some tension to the picture. There are also some stakes at play but none of them seem born out of anything genuinely compelling. It will struggle to find an audience who isn’t already interested in seeing it after its successful festival bow.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
