Review: (#1, B+) The kaleidoscopic effect is an interesting choice and if you don’t look at it right, it might almost look like a Michelangelo painting, which speaks to the film’s religious sentiments. (#2, C) The dancing nature of the worshippers of the film is given poor representation with this design using a needlessly diarrheal color scheme.

(#2, C) This poster is dull. It certainly gives the idea that the film is period-set and features some measure of dance but the empty background and the 70MM reference simply don’t make this design fresh or appealing.

Review: (#1, C+) It’s difficult to find a story threat in this trailer to pull on and get a compelling look at the film’s premise. It’s hinted that it’s visually striking and pretty daring but none of that comes through in this rather lackluster preview.

(#2, B) Without context, this trailer doesn’t quite make sense. Those who’ve read up on the Shaker Movement will certainly comprehend but creating confusion within the general public isn’t likely to generate much appeal unless you’re a fan of Amanda Seyfried. Still, it generates a fair amount of intrigue and curious audiences might just check it out to see what’s going on.

Oscar Prospects:

Could this be one of the top contenders of the year? It’s uncertain. It didn’t build a lot of festival buzz but we have to see how critics respond when the film fully releases before deciding for sure.
