Review: (#1, C) Animated films using empty white backgrounds for their poster designs appears to be the new norm. It’s intended to make the characters stand out but it looks ridiculously cheap and although the look on the Twits’ faces certainly makes this look like an kid-friendly effort, it doesn’t have any artistic merit.

Trailer Rating: C+

Review: (#1, C+) Aggressively kid-friendly, this trailer may highlight the animation decently well but it feels like it’s leaning too heavily into its childish elements. Sure Roald Dahl was a children’s author but his films have a bizarre aesthetic that appeals to some middle-aged audiences as well. The storyline is poorly conveyed and there are moments when the animation feels disjointed. Ultimately, it feels to provide an entertaining vehicle for the type of audience that would likely turn out for it.

Oscar Prospects:

The surprising dearth of animated features contending for the Oscars is surprising. While the world of Raold Dahl is perfect for adaptation, animated films based on his works haven’t always been successful either. Ultimately, Netflix will support one of its features over the others for the Oscars and this seems the most likely. It has the stop-motion feel that reminds of Aardman, Laika, and recent nominee Memoir of a Snail and that could benefit it in a sea of traditionally animated features, even if it isn’t stop-motion. A decent contender but not a guarantee.
