Review: (#1, B-) Almost gone are the pink and green of the original aesthetic and substituted in is a change to Glinda’s gown, which employs blues and purples to less sensational effect. Their positioning, while symbolic, is a bit too stilted. (#2, C+) This reminds more of one of the best designs for the original film but it feels underwhelming.
(#3, C+) While many of the first film’s designs were terrific, there’s a noticeable cheapness of these new designs. Sure it pushes in the green elements to blend with the pink, which is certainly symbolic, but they are poorly edited, disparate elements obviously enfolded for maximum cheapness. (#4, C+) Although many of the designs have looked similar to give both figures a balancing effect, this effort is less detailed but more visually stimulating than the prior. (#5-#6, C+) With the central figure forming the middle of the “W” for Wicked, the designers struggled to make that come off looking interesting and ultimately, it just looks underwhelming. (#7-#8, C+) There isn’t a lot to these two designs, they are similar to many prior designs. While they feel more interesting than prior efforts, there’s a lot of unnecessarily wasted space. (#9, C+) The underwhelming background details that could have been infused into the poster undersell the myriad fascinating characters of the film focusing instead on its two protagonists. While that will do enough to get butts in seats, the poster itself isn’t likely to win converts.
(#10-#11, B-) Credit to the designer for making a pair of IMAX designs look visually stunning but still lacking depth. They also both look a bit overly touched up. (#12-#17, C) A series of underwhelming format/theatrical model designs that each try for something a little different but never succeed in generating a bit of vitality for the film. I will single out the D-Box design for trying to create something unique even if it ultimately failed. (#18, B) This format design looks compelling with the wicked witch a silhouette into which the design can expand. Yet, she’s also in the stack of characters which doesn’t quite hit the symbolic concept of the witch hanging over the proceedings like the Sword of Damocles. (#19, B+) Sufficiently designed to feature the main characters and using aesthetic elements from the film to highlight the dichotomies on display as well as hinting at the ties back to the original Wizard of Oz story. (#20-28, B-) A string of the character posters that are as unique as their included characters with lots of little details to bolster the character and their filmic setting. They are a bit static but not disarmingly so. (#29-#30, C+) These almost look like scenes from the film but are most certainly not. They are affected, excruciatingly overproduced, and ultimately a bit underwhelming.

Review: (#1, A-) So many trailers for musical features go to great lengths to mask their musical content. The original film did the same initially but now that everyone knows the film is a musical, it does no one any harm to highlight that and highlight it they do. There are snippets of popular songs, rising tension, and the end result is just the kind of trailer that will remind everyone why they want to catch its finale.
(#2, C+) We can only hope this isn’t a trend for the year where every few weeks a new trailer appears. This is such a step down from the prior that it’s not a promising directional fall. There’s not much new here either, which is a shame.
(#3, B+) Have you been changed for the better? This film’s trailers certainly have been. After the disastrous second effort, this third almost reaches the heights of the first one with several musical cues, plenty of references to the musical and film on which it’s based, and presents much of the story as it will progress while leaving room for the battle that will emerge. Fans of the musical and the film based on it are sure to be excited by this trailer even if it gives perhaps a little too much away.
Oscar Prospects:
The first film scored many Oscar nominations and if the quality remains high in this finale, it will be a major player as well.
