Review: (#1, C) The positioning of figures are reminiscent of Gone With the Wind with the tree vaguely visible in the background. Although imitation isn’t necessarily a bad thing, the emptiness of the white background and the blending of sad setting with Elordi’s clothing makes for an unimpressive effect.

(#2-#4, C) This triptych of designs are limited and while they tap into the lusty nature of the film, they don’t stand out particularly well. (#5, C) There is a mediocre sultriness to this close-up design and with the yellow titling, it is striking though unimpressive.

(#6, C) Perhaps the intent is to create a sense of electric passion but it feels more like Elordi is starting in Frankenstein 2: Electric Boogaloo.. Not a particular romantic effort. (#7, C-) No background may allow the foreground details to stick out but the passion feels somewhat muted. (#8-#9, C) This pair of designs might speak to the characters but they create such a bland set of backdrops that they just feel uninteresting. (#10-#14, C+) Credit for creating an interesting concept for the character posters, or perhaps cameo designs, the various backgrounds matching up with the color of the central image is an interesting touch, especially with the backgrounds looking like they might also match the character’s personality. Still, they are very copy-and-pasty and that makes them feel like a missed effort.

Trailer Rating: A / B+

Review: (#1, A) Many modern filmmakers have their own style and none is more engaging and fascinating than Emerald Fennell’s. This trailer exudes her cinematic familiarity blended with new age techniques for a film that looks daring, inventive, and a step in a different direction for stuffy gothic romantic fiction. The music adds dimension as well with a clear sensuality making the film look far more interesting than a boring traditional trailer might have asserted.

(#2, B+) Although it doesn’t quite reach the “heights” of the prior trailer, it still has an undeniable charm and sexiness that will sure drive some mad with anticipation. It expects the viewer to already know the story, which allows them to be light on the details and to focus in on the sexual tension.

Oscar Prospects:

Emerald Fennell’s first film was an Oscar winner. Her second film was ignored. This certainly looks like a film that could garner a few nominations though likely only in the craft categories.
