The Producers Guild of America are announcing their awards this evening. As I get the results, I’ll post them here. There are only three categories we’ll be concerned with, so bare with as it takes time to get past all the other awards. (Editor: As of 12:30 am CT, all prizes have been awarded)
I loved The King’s Speech and Black Swan, but Inception and The Social Network are more special and probably be remembered more in the future.
Inception, being Sci-fi genre has a very difficult chance to win best picture. The Social Network has a lock on adapted screenplay and director and music, so you never know. King’s Speech could win picture, actor, original screenplay and costume design.
I personally will give the award to Social Network, although if King’s Speech manages to win I won’t be upset like when Crash or A Beautiful Mind won (yuck!)
Is Harvey finally playing hard ball? I like the movie, but it is NOT Best Picture material…
Of course, King’s Speech is passing the $50 million mark this week and will likely add heavily to that gross after the Oscar nominations Tuesday…maybe they are pre-awarding it since it might actually cross the $100 million mark and beat Social Network at the box office.
But will the Academy go for it? It’s hard to tell. If this was a case of Harvey strong-arming his associates, it could be another Shakespeare in Love, but before SiL, there were Crying Games and Pulp Fictions that failed to resonate with the Academy. Of course, when Harvey picked up a traditional epic with The English Patient, Miramax won their first Best Picture prize. And since King’s Speech is more traditional than Social Network, it might actually pull something out.
Then again, if the PGA was just tired of the Social Network juggernaut and wanted to go a different direction, it doesn’t mean the Academy will as well.
The PGA has voted with Oscar 14 of 21 times. Strangely enough, the last two big upsets in Oscar Best Picture recent history, Brokeback Mountain and Saving Private Ryan, the PGA went with the sweep. This time, they went against it. So, I really don’t know what to make of it. Of course, this could be another 1992 where Harvey pulled off a PGA win but failed to translate it to an Oscar.
Scott Rudin has his work cut out for him this year.
