PERSONAL THOUGHTS

Updated: 9/18/09

An important figure in Oscar history even if he never received an Oscar nomination. Army Archerd hosted the red carpet arrivals for decades and for many of us was the voice and spirit of the Oscars that helped us prepare for a night of glamor and excitement. In addition to his hosting duties at the Academy Awards, Archerd also served as journalist for Variety magazine among other film-related endeavors. He is as much a part of Academy Awards history as the famed refusals, Bob Hope and a host of winners.

Tributes Listed by Year

Sorted into the year of their passing, below are the tribute pages I've put together for many noted figures in world and entertainment history.

July & August Update

There may have been only 19 new tributes in this update, but there were several figures I am sad to see go. Henry Gibson, the brilliant comedian from Laugh-In fame; Mary Travers of the legendary folk group Peter, Paul & Mary; Patrick Swayze, the former '80s heartthrob who made women's (and a few men's) hearts flutter in Dirty Dancing and Ghost and delivered a staggeringly funny performance in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar; Army Archerd, legendary film journalist and red carpet mainstay; M*A*S*H creator Larry Gelbart, who also wrote the classic cross-dressing comedy Tootsie; Disc Jockey Adam Goldstein; writer Dominick Dunne; and several others. Each, even if not recognizable names, deserving their own piece of memorium and included in today's Tributes update.

July & August Update

It's been a couple of months, but I've finally gotten the time together to update this section of the site. I've also implemented a few tracking mechanisms on my end that will allow me to more quickly post updates. Today, we have 47 new tributes made available.

Senator Edward Kennedy

Although he was always overshadowed by his elder brothers, each of whom met their fates at the end of an assassin's bullet, Edward Kennedy my very well be one of the most influential legislators in the history of this country, if not one of the most. His passion for equality and fairness for everyone in the country regardless of skin color, gender or sexual orientation was one of his greatest qualities. While he isn't exactly an entertainment industry legend, he embodied the spirit of what filmmakers have been trying to capture for decades from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington to Bulworth. He was a man cut from cloth that is seldom found these days. Hopefully, many generations to come will see him as an inspiration and the fight for equality will continue to grow and not diminish with his passing.
