With a strong opening weekend of $117 million, Spider-Man: Homecoming will be pushing hard to claim the top spot a second week in a row. If it drops 50% in its second weekend, that will be roughly $58.5 million. That would create just enough of a drop to allow War for the Planet of the Apes to crest in for a win. The first of the prequel films opened to $54.8 million, but it’s follow-up pulled in $72.6 million. If it further improves, Spidey won’t stand a chance, but if franchise fatigue has set in, it may fall into the middle range between those two points making for a tight race.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first two films in the rebooted series were fantastic. Based on early word, it appears this one will be too.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The reboot of this franchise has achieved a rare thing, it’s been consistently stronger than the original. This one should be no exception.
Tripp Burton (TB): The last film in this franchise surprised me as one of the smartest and most entertaining franchise films in a very long time, so I’m excited to see what comes next.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The technology keeps improving, though I am worried that the writing will not be as good this time around. Still, it should be fun to watch.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While I lament the lack of 1980s style slasher flicks, I don’t lament the lack of supernatural killers.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another week, another horror movie.
Tripp Burton (TB): I feel like I’ve seen this film already a hundred times and there isn’t much new here.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Didn’t horror films used to be relegated to October? This one does not look very interesting or very different.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A hokey premise featuring a decent cast. Even with that cast, I can’t imagine myself seeing it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Tired looking old-fashioned melodrama.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks bland and generic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks too serious for its own good and probably wastes a good cast. The Anna Karenina tie-ins are probably to make it feel more important, but will probably prove to show its shallowness.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s something fascinating about the frantic pace and modestly humorous style in the trailer and that puts this surprising on my to-see list.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Gallic comedy could have its charms.
Tripp Burton (TB): The story behind the film — that the actors made the film and performed the play at the same time — seems more interesting than the film itself.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer seems confused as to what the movie is about. It looks rather a mess.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It may be good. It may not be. The trailer doesn’t sufficiently answer that question.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a provocative adaptation of the classic Russian novel, not the Shakespeare play, reset in 19th century England.
Tripp Burton (TB): This doesn’t seem to grip me as much as I think it should.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer did not excite me, but the reviews make it sound worthwhile.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks a bit too corny for my tastes even if it appears to be super-serious.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Low-budget sci-fi conspiracy drama doesn’t excite me.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like an interesting little film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A few early reviews make it sound like an interesting character study, but the trailer looks more like a typical conspiracy thriller. Unfortunately, I feel it will be more the latter.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While I do love Catherine Deneuve, I’m not sure this film will be an adequate vehicle for her.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Low-key French drama has only Catherine Deneuve to recommend it.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a fine film that I will probably never catch up with.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This study of two women brought back together shows promise, and hopefully it will fulfill that. Catherine Deneuve is usually worth watching, so that may be enough.
