Only two new films open this weekend. One will appeal strictly to families, the other will appeal mostly to male teens and young men.
Consensus
Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: None of us even wanted to see the original, so I think you know what that means (100% Won’t See). Sequels to non-Oscar nominees don’t usually generate Oscar nominations themselves (100% No Chance).
Sucker Punch: We’re mostly against watching the film (67% Won’t See) and we agree that Oscar won’t come calling, especially when it didn’t with the two previous Zack Snyder live action efforts (100% No Chance).
Miral: DVD is the most likely place for any of us to watch this (67% DVD) and despite Schanbel’s previous efforts, we don’t feel this will be an Oscar contender (67% No Chance).
Potiche: Another DVD rental for a respected director (67% DVD) and based on Ozon’s past Oscar history (none), we don’t feel there will be more this time (67% No Chance).

ThoughtsI had no interest in the original, so I won’t be watching the sequel. |
ThoughtsDidn’t see the original and have no desire to see the sequel of a film directed toward pre-adolescents. |
ThoughtsI had no interest in the first film. I have no interest in this film. |

ThoughtsVisual style is the only expectation I have going into this film. Zack Snyder’s prior two films (Watchmen and 300) were visually stunning, but emotionally and narratively weak. I expect nothing more this time around. |
ThoughtsI kind of liked the director’s Watchmen and am interested in seeing what he does with the reboot of the Superman franchise, but this one just looks like a lot of noise to me. |
ThoughtsZack Snyder’s films tend to give me headaches, and this looks no different. |

ThoughtsJulian Schnabel is one of our most important directors of film art, so his work is worth watching, though at the theater is unlikely for me. |
ThoughtsThis was an early contender for last year’s Oscars, then the buzz died. Still, the director, Julian Schnabel, and star, Hiam Abbass, tend to make thoughtful, interesting films, so maybe it is worth the time. |
ThoughtsI had big hopes for this last Oscar season, but now it looks like I can wait until DVD. |

ThoughtsWhile Oscar voters don’t seem to enjoy his work, I like both of Francois Ozon’s films that I’ve watched, and with the cast and premise behind this one, I have little doubt I’ll probably enjoy this as well. |
ThoughtsInteresting premise, good cast, pedigreed director, probably worth catching. |
ThoughtsFrancois Ozon and a very fun, international cast looks like this could be a fun date-night rental down the line. |
