Two guilds and an organization announced nominees this week including the always interesting USC Scripter Awards and the costume designers and sound editors guilds.

But, before we get into this week’s winners and losers, let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week:

Week 9

Saturday, Jan. 26 – Producers Guild Awards
Sunday, Jan. 27 – Screen Actors Guild Awards
Sunday, Jan. 27 – Online Film & Television Association Nominations

Big Winners

Argo had an excellent week pulling in nominations from all three nomination slates this week including a surprising costume design nomination for period design. There were many other period dramas in release in 2012 and that the more laid back designs of Argo were selected (and they have been partially in fashion for a few years) were recognized suggests the film has broad support.
Life of Pi also has broad support, but not with the costume designers. There’s very little costume work in the film, but it was one of four films tying for lead at the Motion Picture Sound Editors nominations, meaning it’s still got solid technical-level support.
Skyfall also did well this week joining the aforementioned two films with three nominations from the sound editors and also picking up nominations from the costume designers and the USC. While none of these are helpful in predicting the Oscar winners, a well-placed win from the MPSE might suggest it being strong competition in the Sound Editing category at the Oscars.

Big Losers

None With only nominations announced this week, no single film had such a poor performance that their Oscar chances would be damaged.
