We had one film releasing this weekend with the potential for Oscar nominations.

Total Recall

In the end, the weekend only saw one film with any real shot at Oscar nominations and that film was such a box office disappointment that unless the tech branches are particularly excitable about it, look for it to be completely ignored. The original Total Recall won a special achievement award for Best Visual Effects. It also nominated in Sound Mixing and Sound Editing categories (that year’s equivalents anyway). Those are the categories I’d most expect to see this remake nominated in. The film also received a sound drubbing from critics, which suggests that they aren’t likely to bolster the film’s chances. And with all of the contenders for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing this year, I’d be surprised if it could cut through the competition and score a nomination.

Stranger things have happened, so I won’t count the film out just yet, but a long shot it has become.
