We had one film release this past weekend with the potential for Oscar nominations.

Blue Jasmine

Woody Allen is the most inconsistent filmmaker working today. There’s little doubt he’s well respected, but his output over the last two decades has ranged from brilliant to bizarre and critics have praised him one year and then turned around the next and panned him. Until critics opine about a film, you cannot say whether this will be the latest Woody Allen Oscar contender or another also-ran.

For every film in the last two decade’s he’s gotten nominated, there’s been another film that looked good on paper and then flopped. This year, however, looks like he’s struck gold again. Critics have been largely positive about Blue Jasmine and most highlight Cate Blanchett’s performance in the film as one of the key elements to contend for a nomination, possibly even an Oscar. Apart from Blanchett, the film’s bona fides suggest that it should also place in Best Original Screenplay, further extending Allen’s long-running record for most nominations and possibly even setting it up as a Best Picture and Best Director nomination.
