The primary guild for costume designers (obviously) is also a bellwether for the Costume Designer category at the Oscars (also obviously).

COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD AWARDS

Best Period Costume Design

Babylon (Peter)
Don’t Worry Darling
Elvis (Wesley, Thomas, RU:Peter)
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (RU:Wesley, RU:Thomas)
The Woman King

Wesley Lovell: Elvis has the flash. Mrs. Harris has the fashion cred. Babylon has the excess. Any one of them could win, but I suspect Elvis has the edge.
Peter J. Patrick: I’d give it to the truly exceptional designs in Babylon, but others seem obsessed with the designs in Elvis. Either could win, as could those for Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.
Tripp Burton: No predictions or commentary provided.
Thomas LaTourette: The flashy designs of Elvis should win. Its closest competition comes from Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris which is set in a fashion house. Movies like that can often win but I still think the award will go to Elvis.

Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Costume Design

Avatar: The Way of Water
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Wesley, Peter, Thomas)
Everything Everywhere All at Once (RU:Wesley, RU:Peter, RU:Thomas)
Hocus Pocus 2
Thor: Love and Thunder

Wesley Lovell: It would be a bit of a shock if Ruth Carter didn’t win this for Black Panther, but a surge from Everything could certainly bolster its chances.
Peter J. Patrick: Carter’s spectacular designs for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever should take this easily.
Tripp Burton: No predictions or commentary provided.
Thomas LaTourette: Even though the original Black Panther won this award, I think the sequel probably will win it as well. The only other one that seems likely to upset is Everything Everywhere All at Once, but, as its costumes are mostly not as striking as Black Pantherโ€™s, I do not expect it to win.

Best Contemporary Costume Design

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Wesley, Thomas)
Nope
Tรกr (Peter, RU:Wesley)
Top Gun: Maverick
Women Talking (RU:Peter, RU:Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: Glass Onion is the only one of these that looked challenging to design, so I suspect it probably has the lead.
Peter J. Patrick: Tรกr has some nice contemporary designs. The costumes for runner-up Women Talking are for a film that takes place in the present, but the clothes they are wearing are for the most part, traditional.
Tripp Burton: No predictions or commentary provided.
Thomas LaTourette: Glass Onion had the largest assortment of contemporary costumes, so I think it will win.
