Here we look at the upcoming month’s offerings.

February 3, 2023

80 for Brady

Premise: From IMDb: “A group of friends made it their life-long mission to go to the Super Bowl and meet NFL superstar Tom Brady.”
Box Office Prospects: $65 M
Expectations: Uncertain. This sports comedy with a quartet of fiesty older women might have some older viewers interested, but for the most part the trailer doesn’t present anything that would make it a huge success among younger viewers.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Knock at the Cabin

Premise: From IMDb: “While vacationing, a girl and her parents are taken hostage by armed strangers who demand that the family make a choice to avert the apocalypse.”
Box Office Prospects: $55 M
Expectations: Uncertain. M. Night Shyamalan’s renaissance was short lived. After the success of his Unbreakable sequels, Old was a pandemic-era box office dud. Can Knock at the Cabin exceed expectations? Maybe.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Consecration

Premise: From IMDb: “After the alleged suicide of her priest brother, Grace travels to the remote Scottish convent where he fell to his death. Distrusting the Church’s account, she uncovers murder, sacrilege and a disturbing truth about herself.”
Box Office Prospects: $35 M
Expectations: Uncertain. Yet another religious-themed horror film isn’t likely to excite audience that have grown weary of them.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance

Premise: From IMDb: “Plot kept under wraps.”
Box Office Prospects: $50 M
Expectations: Weak. The first film was a surprise hit, but its sequel wasn’t as popular. Diminishing returns is likely, so don’t expect much with this one except for there being nothing else to watch at the box office.
Oscar Prospects: None.

February 17, 2023

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Premise: From IMDb: “Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne, along with Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, explore the Quantum Realm, where they interact with strange creatures and embark on an adventure that goes beyond the limits of what they thought was possible.”
Box Office Prospects: $240 M
Expectations: Excellent. The first Ant-Man film was a solid hit, the sequel outperformed its predecessor by more than $35 million. While the third film increasing by a similar amount is unlikely, that won’t stop it from trying.
Oscar Prospects: Weak. This series has always been a visual effects marvel, but for Marvel, it’s not been a visual effects hit at the Oscars. And this isn’t likely to change that.

Of an Age (Expanding)

Premise: From IMDb: “A Serbian ballroom dancer experiences an unexpected and intense 24-hour romance with a friend’s older brother.”
Box Office Prospects: $0.1 M
Expectations: Weak. The film has gotten almost no attention from critics and is expanding wide? This seems like a poor decision, which makes one wonder why it’s trying.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Cocaine Bear

Premise: From IMDb: “An oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists, and teens converge in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound black bear goes on a murderous rampage after unintentionally ingesting cocaine.”
Box Office Prospects: $75 M
Expectations: Uncertain. This will either be a huge success or a huge flop, I don’t think there can be an in between. It’s such a crazy trailer that it might just pull off the success part.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Jesus Revolution

Premise: From IMDb: “The true story of a national spiritual awakening in the early 1970’s and its origins within a community of teenage hippies in Southern California.”
Box Office Prospects: $10 M
Expectations: Weak. There’s no indication that a film like this will be a mainstream hit. It might have some supporters on a niche basis, but I imagine this will under perform all metrics.
Oscar Prospects: None.
