We’re midsummer now with Cannes behind and Toronto/Telluride/Venice ahead. As such, we’re adding two categories that speak to the grandeur of the summer: Original Score and Visual Effects. Beyond this, we’re just starting to get more details about the films coming out in the file and contending for the Oscars. In certain categories, we appear to be rather consistent and narrowed while others are completely wide open affairs.

Introductions

Wesley Lovell: The closer we get, the more things clarify and with the first trailer for Digger out, a lot of things become more obvious so most of this month’s changes are related to a shift in momentum for that film. Otherwise, a lot of things largely stayed the same.
Pete Patrick: Things are still in flux with no real certainties likely until after the fall festivals.
Thomas LaTourette: In June I felt at sea as I tried to make my predictions. This month I feel a little more confident. The Odyssey is still poised to be the big Oscar contender of the year, and in less than a week we will know if it is any good or not. Movies like The Invite and La Bola Negra can suddenly appear on lists that make them seem probable Oscar contenders. It is nice to be surprised. Of course we will not see La Bola Negra until November, but it was little talked about until recently. I am still curious to see how many noms Sandra Hüller can pull off for her acting in four different films, as she has gotten good reviews for all of them. Several acting spots could be filled with people still looking for their first win, which may make for exciting races. And some well respected directors have films coming out which makes the fall a time to look forward to.
