Every week, we’ll pose a new “five favorites” question. You just list your five favorites that fit in that category (preferably in preference order) and you’re welcome to discuss and debate the selections and see just how much you do or do not have in common with others. If you want to take a look back at our past articles to comment or enjoy, here is a post set aside to track all of our articles.

Aside from the ones I expected (e.g., Ejiofor, Bob Nelson for “Nebraska”), here are five that brought a smile to my face:
Jonah Hill–Supporting Actor
“Happy”–Original Song
Christian Bale–Best Actor
“20 Feet from Stardom”–Best Documentary Feature
Sally Hawkins–Supporting Actress
Well, crossing off what I thought were give ins, these were the nominees that I wasn’t quite expecting, but was delighted to see get nominated.
Alexander Payne for Director
Amy Adams for American Hustle
The Grandmaster for Cinematography
Philomena for Best Picture and Score (the Alexandre Desplat nomination streak continues)
“Happy” from Despicable Me 2 for Best Song
As for my favorite nominations:
Nebraska getting six nods (I’ll just count all of them as one so it’s not a short list)
Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street
Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave
Gravity for Cinematography and Visual Effects
Let it Go for Best Song
John Williams – The Book Thief
Lupita Nyongo – 12 years a slave
Frozen – Original Song
Meryl Streep – August: Osage County
Thomas Newman – Saving Mr Banks
(btw very glad Gravity got 10 nominations…..a brilliant film and hopefully it will get more recognition than tech awards only)
