Every week, we’ll pose a new “five favorites” question. You just list your five favorites that fit in that category (preferably in preference order) and you’re welcome to discuss and debate the selections and see just how much you do or do not have in common with others. If you want to take a look back at our past articles to comment or enjoy, here is a post set aside to track all of our articles.
There are some actors and actresses who are so bad that when they finally deliver that shockingly good performance they stand out in your mind. Who are your favorites?
What are your 5 Favorite performances by bad actors?
The ONLY good performances from Grant are in Four Weddings and a Funeral and indeed About a Boy, okay maybe Notting Hill too. Unfortunately, he also gave us Nine Months, Mickey Blue Eyes, Did You Hear About the Morgans, American Dreamz, Two Weeks Notice and Extreme Measures. I’m sure there are more bad ones, these are just from memory.
While I wouldn’t classify the following performers as bad actors, I’ve never been otherwise that impressed by most of their work.
Sylvester Stallone – Rocky
Adrien Brody – The Pianist
Louise Fletcher – One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
Matthew McConaughey – Lone Star
Adam Sandler – Punch Drunk Love
I’ll add a surprisingly decent performance from a wooden actor:
Jean Claude Van Damme in JCVD
How about the reverse, five favorite bad performances by usually good actresses?
Esther Williams in The Unguarded Moment (1956)
Jayne Mansfield in The Wayward Bus (1957)
Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)
Cameron Diaz in Being John Malkovich (1999)
Kristen Stewart in Into the Wild (2007)
Don’t know how, but I mis-read this as five good performances by bad actresses. For male actors, I’d agree with Mike Kelly’s picks of Stallone, Brody and McConaughey and add Jean-Claude Van Damme in Nowhere to Run and Cuba Gooding, Jr. in Jerry Maguire.
