As the precursor awards continue unabated until Oscar night, I’m going to be providing a weekly update highlighting the films that have won and lost momentum through the precursor awards (and in some cases other outside influences).

There were only three precursors this past week, the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, the Online Film & Television Association, and the Film Music Critics. The latter two announced nominations, while the guild announced its winners. With so few groups, I’m going to do this list a little differently this week. Next week. however, there are some big groups, so there will be a much more typical list of winners and losers.

But, before we get into this week’s winners and losers, let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week:

Week 12 (TUE-MON)

Tuesday, Feb. 14 – Canadian Screen Awards (Canada) (Nominations) (Unconfirmed)
Wednesday, Feb. 15 – Visual Effects Society (Awards) (Official)
Thursday, Feb. 16 – Berlin Film Festival (Festival) (Official)
Friday, Feb. 17 – Hollywood Critics (Creative Arts) (Awards) (Official)
Saturday, Feb. 18 – Houston Critics (Awards) (Official)
Saturday, Feb. 18 – Art Directors (Awards) (Official)
Saturday, Feb. 18 – Directors Guild (Awards) (Official)
Sunday, Feb. 19 – Latino Critics (Awards) (Official)
Sunday, Feb. 19 – British Academy (Awards) (Official)
Sunday, Feb. 19 – Young Artists Awards (Awards) (Unconfirmed)

Big Winners

The Whale, and Elvis were the big winners at the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists (MUAHS) guild with the former taking the Oscar-predictive Make Up Effects category while the latter was the only film to win multiple awards. Both are going into the Oscars in solid positions.
Everything Everywhere All at Once, Top Gun: Maverick, and The Banshees of Inisherin were the three top nominees at the Online Film & Television Association (OFTA) with Everything picking up a staggering 20 nominations, the first film in more than a decade to hit that magic number. All are top contenders for their awards.
Avatar: The Way of Water, The Batman, and The Fabelmans were the winners at the International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA) where all three received 3 nominations apiece, the most for any feature film.

Big Losers

The Batman is the only Oscar nominee that didn’t win an award at the MUAHS awards. While that doesn’t mean it’s Oscar chances are dashed, they aren’t looking good either.
All Quiet on the Western Front, and Triangle of Sadness did abysmally with the OFTA, neither of which appeared in the Best Picture race and neither doing nearly as well as they did at the Oscars. That could show that interest in the films is relatively limited and that the Oscars won’t be fertile grounds for them.
All Quiet on the Western Front, The Banshees of Inisherin, and Everything Everywhere All at Once are the only Oscar nominees for Best Original Score that didn’t get a single nomination at the IFMCA. They didn’t show in the main category, nor any of the genre categories, which means trouble for their Oscar chances. Making the race seem like a two-way between Babylon and The Fabelmans.
