Three potential box office toppers release this weekend and, once again, Marvel appears to be likely to win it all. Mortal Engines is the latest attempt to building a major young adult dystopian cinematic franchise. Few have succeeded and while this one seems bolder and more effects-heavy than prior versions, it still looks to be the kind of film that disappoints and nosedives after the weekend. The Mule is the latest attempt by Clint Eastwood to remain relevant as a viable director. The film has been labeled as minor and while Eastwood has been a draw in the past, does anyone really want to see a dour movie about an old man smuggling drugs for the sake of his estranged family? Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the latest Sony attempt to make something out of its Spider-Man property and all appearances suggest that they’ve finally hit on something spectacular. It’s won numerous awards for Best Animated Feature and appears to be in the running for an Oscar nomination, and possibly even a win. That plus the animated component make this a very serious threat to box office dominance. Especially with nothing else in sight.

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept is interesting, though the trailer makes this look like your garden variety young adult dystopian adventure. |

Wesley Lovell (WL): Clint Eastwood has never been one of my favorite actors, though his directorial efforts are usually worth it; however, this one just looks dreary from start to finish. |

Wesley Lovell (WL): This is one of the must-see films of the season. That first trailer had me hooked even if the subsequent trailers didn’t. |
