Review: (#1, C) Using an iconic scene from the original animated film is fitting though underwhelming. It’s only a teaser, thankfully.

(#2, C+) For those who are already enticed or who are Dwayne Johnson fans, this might be all they need to purchase a ticket but with as much money as Disney can put into promotional materials, the end result is mightily limited with the background notably empty.

(#3, C) A bland poster that doesn’t tell the viewer anything more than it already knows and without the excitement of visual splendor. (#4, C+) a nice setting with lots of little details that encapsulate the film’s content but there’s not much of excitement beyond that. (#5-#6, #9, #11, C+; #7-#8, #10, C) As individually distinctive as the designs are there’s an unimpressiveness to them all. Some are slightly better than others such that the IMAX design has a visual beauty that’s surprising, Real 3D has cheekiness, Screen X slaps its name on a prior design that’s still better than some of the unique selections, and Dolby has character and danger. The others are underwhelming. (#12-#15, C) Another underwhelming batch of character posters from Disney. Simplicity may be quick and easy to produce but it’s not satisfying.

Trailer Rating: B- / C / C+

Review: (#1, B-) One of the biggest problems with How to Train Your Dragon, the live-action version, was that the trailer felt that re-presenting scenes from the original film with live actors was a selling point. Whereas this trailer gives us snippets and tidbits to entice the audience and fans of the original may be drawn in just because it looks a little bit different.

(#2, C) Now that we’re seeing more of the film, it becomes obvious that this is yet another live-action adaptation that shouldn’t be. It looks derivative and poorly acted with the real life Dwayne Johnson looking less impressive than the character he voiced in the original animated movie.

(#3, C+) If you were worried about this film being a carbon-copy of the animated feature, rest assured…it is. This trailer doesn’t present much of anything that doesn’t point in that direction and with it only having been 10 years since the film first released in theaters, there’s not enough space between to create a longing for the content and this preview doesn’t change that.
