I’m still confused why they have expanded the category to FIVE this year!
I think that EVERY category should be FIVE nominees – no ifs no buts!
It is going to be a farce when something like Alice in wonderland gets nominated for visual effects – which I think it will – and an animated feature like The Illusionist, Tangled or Legends of the Guardians miss out because they had 15 not 16 eligible films entered!
The reason for expaning the Best Picture category to 10 in 2009 was because of the snub of the Darke Knight – but there are numerous good reasons to get rid of all these silly restrictions that limit some categories to just three nominees.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that Best Original song will be just 3 nominees this year.
The expansion to 5 for Visual Effects is a new rule, not an exception.
And Disney tried to augment the number of eligible features (see the haphazard submission of Tinker Bell, it’s a trick they try every year), but apparently there just weren’t enough. Now, if they used a weighted measurement like Original Song does and Visual Effects used to, we’d probably see five nominees more frequently.
Imagine how nice it would be if Alice in Wonderland and Iron Man 2 were left out of the five nominees in favor of Scott Pilgrim & Hereafter. Here’s hoping the visual effects branch loves to pull surprises out of their hat this year.
I love that Scott Pilgrim is still on the list, but considering the other nominees, I would say the most likely two to get bumped out are Hereafter and Scott Pilgrim just because the others seem more obvious nominees. Though, Scott Pilgrim making the final five would be sweet.
