We continue our coverage of our favorite Oscar moments by looking at three new years: 1967, 1992 and 2001. In our mix are honorary Oscars, host antics and surprise appearances.

Peter J. Patrick

1967, 40th Academy Awards

Alfred Hitchcock wins his only Oscar, the Thalberg for producing, not directing.

Wesley Lovell

1992, 65th Academy Awards

When Billy Crystal hosted the Academy Awards, many traditions emerged each year, one of them the musical introduction of the Best Picture nominees. These medleys have their moments of memorability, but the one that sticks out most in my head is from his fourth hosting gig in 1992 when The Crying Game was a nominee for Best Picture. In the song produced, the words “Those eyes, those thighs, Surprise! It’s The Crying Game” still get me tickled today. By that time everyone knew what the secret was and Crystal milked it for what it was worth.

Tripp Burton

2001, 74th Academy Awards

Maybe the biggest surprise in Oscar history (that wasn’t award-centered) was the appearance of my all-time favorite filmmaker, and perennial Oscar no-show, Woody Allen, to introduce this post-9/11 montage of New York movie moments. He was funny, witty, touching and an essential part of that year-long healing process.
