From our earliest Oscar memories to the ones where we vocally cheer to the unique fashions, Cinema Sight’s Favorite Oscar Moments series continues with its eighth incarnation.

Peter J. Patrick

1958, 31st Academy Awards

My first Oscar show. Two moments stand out. The first is Rosalind Russell’s presentation of a Special Award to Maurice Chevalier and his “Thank you, Auntie Mame.” The second is Ingrid Bergman opening the envelope to announce the Best Picture winner, flinging her arm in the air and shouting “Gigi!”

Tripp Burton

1977, 50th Academy Awards

The Academy Awards have always been plagued by political speeches no one wants to hear, and kudos for Paddy Chayefsky for saying something about it. I wish Hollywood would call itself out like this more often.

1994, 67th Academy Awards

Oh, the dresses! The Academy Awards have always been about movies, but so many watch because of the fashion. Many famous dresses have been worn at the Oscars, from the garish (Bjork) to the bizarre (Cher) to the gorgeous (Cate Blanchett). But no dress is more memorable than the one Lizzy Gardiner wore the night she won her Academy Award for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. In the film, she created some most outlandish dresses (gowns that lit up, goans made of flip-flops, etc.), but her dress that evening? A frock made from gold American Express cards. And the fun part is it looked really great!
