Milestones & quips make up many of our reflections for the Oscars. Here are three more moments that we enjoyed tremendously.

Peter J. Patrick

1973, 46th Academy Awards

A terminally ill Susan Hayward makes her last appearance on the arm of Charlton Heston and Katharine Hepburn makes her only appearance. As David Niven intones, “A star is a star is a star. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a star!”

Tripp Burton

1996, 69th Academy Awards

When 1997 Documentary short winner Jessica Yu took the stage, she gave my all-time favorite Oscar acceptance line: “You know you’re in new territory when you realize your outfit cost more than your film.”

Wesley Lovell

2001, 74th Academy Awards

Becoming the first black actress to win the lead actress trophy at the Oscars meant more to Halle Berry than anything and her passion and excitement shows. She helped us share her joy. Although I was unable to find Berry’s acceptance speech (the Academy seems to have very tight control over this one), here’s her lone female predecessor Hattie McDaniel in a rather astounding moment, and a more significant one, accepting her supporting prize in 1939 for Gone With the Wind.
