Here are the results of last week’s poll.

Southerner wins and goes into my queue.

Here’s the deal: every week, I will be calling for suggestions of films to be added to my Netflix queue. Each person makes one suggestion and one alternate (in case I have seen one of your suggestions). The next week, when I call for new suggestions, we begin a one-week voting period to select the film to be placed immediately into my Netflix queue to be reviewed the weekend after (because I’ll already have my Netflix queue selections for the coming weekend). Then, you’ll find out what I thought in my weekly Morning After feature on Monday morning.

Sometimes a genre gets stuck in the rotation and it makes for a rough viewing schedule. Starting this week, I’m going to be asking for suggestions that fit a specific genre so each week can be a bit spicy. The genre or event listed each week will be posted at the end of this post.

To help decide what to pick, here is a list of what I’ve seen (or at least that I have personally logged).

Here’s what you need to post today (and through next Wednesday):

  1. Below, please provide your suggestions to add to my Netflix queue as specified.
  2. Next, please rate each of the following entries in order of preference. Item 1 will be most preferred, 2 next most preferred and so forth.

I’m giving you a list of films from a given Oscar year that I have not yet seen. I’d like each person to choose two from the list to champion for the next week. I’m not including documentaries, short films or foreign language films that were not nominated in other Oscar categories. Eventually, there may be some films included that I’ve seen but not in such a long time that they deserve a revisit.

    I prefer films noir myself but according to Webster, film noirs and films noirs are also acceptable terms for the plural of film noir, although I suppose you could avoid the controversy altogether by calling them film noir movies which sounds even more awkward. 🙂

      Yeah. And dictionaries also say it’s ok to say Missouruh and not Missouri…that doesn’t mean they are right. It just means that enough people do it wrong that they have to cover their asses. Even if they weren’t French words, adjectives should NEVER be pluralized.

    It probably won’t matter, as Notorious is the clear winner, but The Killers should be on this voting block. Netflix has it listed under the 2-disc The Killers, which contains the 1946 version on disc 1, meaning it is readily available.

      I would have given it my #1 pick, if it were eligible. I think it’s one of the top film noirs made.

        Just a pet peeve of mine. It’s Films noir. Because you wouldn’t say Blacks Film. You’d say Black Films.

        Usually Netflix lists two years next to the title if it’s available as a second title on a disk, but none of the entries I saw for it did so.

          You are right about the word usage, but my ear never could get used to “films noir”
          – so I incorrectly treat it as one word filmnoir. I guess I wouldn’t be bothered if it could be written as noir film and noir films, but that isn’t grammatically correct.

          I remember a college paper I did, where the instructor corrected each instance where I used an adverb in between a compound verb: “it is usually thought of” corrected to “it is thought of usually” Another instance of something grammatically correct that doesn’t sound right to my ear.

          I just have to remember to ignore my inner ear when writing.

            It’s French, so of course it will differently to an English speaker’s ear. The reason it sounds weird is because it’s already in reverse of what English speakers usually do, so when you hear it, just immediately go “this isn’t English, it’s not the same rules.” I know you know that, but sometimes it’s the only thing that keeps one sane.

            But if it helps you with pronunciation, in this case, you wouldn’t even pronounce the “s” at the end. It would still be pronounced film noir. It’s just written with an “s” on film.

            Then of course, plenty of English speakers still say passer-bys instead of passers-by. Attorney Generals instead of Attorneys General. We have the same problems in English.
