Seven Samurai wins and goes into my queue.

Here’s the deal: every week, I will be calling for suggestions of films to be added to my Netflix queue. Each person makes one suggestion and one alternate (in case I have seen one of your suggestions). The next week, when I call for new suggestions, we begin a one-week voting period to select the film to be placed immediately into my Netflix queue to be reviewed the weekend after (because I’ll already have my Netflix queue selections for the coming weekend). Then, you’ll find out what I thought in my weekly Morning After feature on Monday morning.

Sometimes a genre gets stuck in the rotation and it makes for a rough viewing schedule. Starting this week, I’m going to be asking for suggestions that fit a specific genre so each week can be a bit spicy. The genre or event listed each week will be posted at the end of this post.

To help decide what to pick, here is a list of what I’ve seen (or at least that I have personally logged).

I’m giving you a list of films from a given Oscar year that I have not yet seen. I’d like each person to choose two from the list to champion for the next week. I’m not including documentaries, short films or foreign language films that were not nominated in other Oscar categories. Eventually, there may be some films included that I’ve seen but not in such a long time that they deserve a revisit.

I hate going last. I’ve seen both Peter and Mike’s picks and unless someone posts that normally doesn’t, my ranking will determine the final results.

  I Vitelloni isn’t a bad choice, but there are better Fellinis coming up. Peyton Place, which ties it in the numbers total, may not be a great film but it was a cultural milestone in its day that should be seen for its historical importance if nothing else. Same is true for An Affair to Remember and Funny Face. Gunfight at the OK Corral was done better as My Darling Clementine and The Spirit of St. Louis is Billy Wilder and Jimmy Stewart lite.

    I’ve only seen I Vitelloni once, but remember thinking that it seemed like it would have been a major influence for Martin Scorsese.
    Peyton Place feels like one of the quintessential 50s melodramas, even it it takes place in 1941. Its strength lies in the supporting players, especially Lloyd Nolan, who wasn’t among the many nominated.
    I agree with you about The Last Hurrah.

  By the way, there’s no comma after I (translation: “the”) in the title I Vitelloni (The Young Bucks).
  
  1958 was actually a very good year but Wesley has apparently already seen most of the better Oscar nominated films – Gigi; Auntie Mame: Separate Tables and Vertigo while two of the best, The Last Hurrah and Touch of Evil weren’t nominated.
  
  I would have suggested A Time to Love and a Time to Die but it’s not available in the U.S.

      Too bad Spencer Tracy wasn’t nominated for The Last Hurrah instead of The Old Man and the Sea, as he should have been, because that’s the film I like to recommend around this time of year. 55 years later, it’s still the best film to watch on Election Day especially now with the Tea Party looking more and more like Tracy’s contemptible know-nothing opposition.
