Review: (#1, C) The signature look of Sacha Baron Cohen’s character dominates this poster and may speak to the film’s content but the hideous yellow-blue combo with minimal details just doesn’t look good.

Trailer Rating: C / B+

Review: (#1, C) Cohen’s character comes off as a gross caricature relic from an abandoned era of comedy. There’s nothing even remotely funny in this dazzlingly retread of a worn out mock documentary concept.

(#2, B+) Learning form the failures of the first trailer, this effort is more dynamic and builds tension in an amusing way. Positioning the film less as a cultural appropriative candid camera film and more as an exposé of both conservative ideologies and liberal protectivism is an intriguing approach. By framing this as an honest look at what underlies bigotry and the attempts to solve it might just be the kind of movie that resonates with a broader audience than expected, though like the Borat films, there’s only so much convincing it will be able to do.
