Poster Rating: B / C

Review: (#1, B) It’s a succinct take on the film’s theme of straight-laced writer having to play up his Blackness to win attention. The blank background is distracting, but that allows the foreground to pop in this case.

(#2, C) The dimensionality of use for the lettering is interesting, but the content is dull and doesn’t tell anyone anything about the film other than its stars.

Trailer Rating: B+ / B+

Review: (#1, B+) A surprisingly funny trailer that puts Jeffrey Wright in a lead role that employs his acting abilities quite effectively. Exploring the idea that Black artists create work that reflects what white audiences think Black characters are like being lucrative is a betrayal of ones identity and yet exceptionally lucrative. It’s a fascinating idea and the trailer does a pretty good job conveying that.

(#2, B+) Giving the viewer far more information about the narrative of the film than the first trailer, it does so without spoiling some elements while hitting only on a few identical moments, which makes it feel fresh and still appealing.

Oscar Prospects:

Winning the Toronto audience award is a strong step towards Oscar nominations.
