Review: (#1, B) Simple designs aren’t always bad. When a poster taps into a certain aesthetic, either of the film or the trailer, it has a certain stylistic unity that makes it appealing. This one uses the trailer’s title elements to frame Pascal’s cellist in an effective and striking way.

(#2, C+) The massive “B” with an exclamation mark combined with the black-and-white aesthetic are an attempt to set this film apart from others at the cineplex but apart from Pedro Pascal’s presence, it’s hardly evocative. (#3, C+) A generic indie film design with panels of actors blocked in on a bland, albeit uniquely colored, backdrop. It’s an instantly forgettable effort.

Review: (#1, A) When a trailer tries something sensationally inventive, such as this one that takes the film’s title and slowly pulls it back while two sets of images play out, one in the background and one highlighted solely within the letter “O,” you have something that stands out well. You don’t get a lot of information about the film’s premise but it certainly looks stylish and that’s a great way to tease your film.

(#2, C) The first trailer was sensational. This trailer is boring. It tries to convey the film’s plot without giving away too much and with little in the way of musical accompaniment, especially a lack of cello music. That makes one wonder who this film is actually meant for. Pascal fans are hardly going to be excited about the film based off this trailer and they are the only ones who can make it a success.

Oscar Prospects:

It’s difficult to tell from the trailer but there are a lot of reasons to believe Behmoth! might be an Oscar contender. We’ll just have to see how well regarded it is when critics see it.
