Review: (#1, C+) While the green-yellow-red of the Jamaican flag is obvious, it comes with an overly simplified foreground and an empty background.

(#2, B-) Marley on the concert stage while the Jamaican colors accentuate him and the title. It’s a bit dull in terms of details, but strongly represents the film’s central figure.

(#3, C+) With too much orange overwhelming the image, the simplicity of it is lost with the glaring white title overbearing. (#4, C) There’s not much here to sell the film as it’s a close-up that doesn’t strike the viewer as very important. (#5, C+) Back to the Jamaican color aesthetic, the neon Dolby logo is well highlighted with the central figure appropriately brightened by it.

Trailer Rating: C+ / B

Review: (#1, C+) A familiar biopic flow infuses this trailer, setting up more information than it should, employing too much dramatic music, and ultimately making the film feel like it’s in conflict with itself.

(#2, B) A strong trailer underscored by Marley’s music helps to drive home the focus of the film. That a lot of the narrative is previewed in the trailer might have less salience due to its position as a biopic.

Oscar Prospects:

With a January release date, it sure doesn’t feel like an Oscar contender, but if it opens limited before the new year, it could be a competitor.
