Review: (#1-#2, B) These character designs hold a mystery in them that ties into the trailer without explaining themselves. They are simple designs but the present a certain minimalist beauty.

(#3, C) The prior designs had some thematic resonance to them but this design tries only to go for cleverness without appeal.

(#4, C) A common motif of this poster series, the QR-code at the center may lead to something interesting and might give audiences something more to do at the theater while simultaneously not making the design nearly as appealing. (#5-#6, C) Taking individual moments in the film without creating energy or excitement just reinvents dullness. (#7-#8, C) This pair of character posters are less appealing than the original two. The stars might be more easily identified but the design is mediocrity at its core with little detail or emotional investment.

(#9, B) An interesting concept that doesn’t make entire sense but that doesn’t matter when looking at this city-set design. (#10, B+) This city-specific design is more compelling and features the deer and cardinal previously included and speaking to the film’s characters and premise.

Trailer Rating: A / B / B+ / B

Review: (#1, A) Have the people producing Spielberg’s trailers been in retirement because this is a top tier trailer that presents a thrilling, mysterious story that has plenty to get viewers excited without giving away most of the show.

(#2, B) While not as thrilling or mysterious as the first trailer, the premise isn’t well fleshed out in this one and that might not generate the same excitement as the prior.

(#3, B+) This third attempt at recapturing the sensational intrigue of the first poster doesn’t quite reach that pinnacle but improves over the second trailer by giving more plot details without explaining the solution and keeping the action and intrigue ramped up as much as possible.

(#4, B) Having Spielberg break in at moments to explain his purpose in making the film does remind the audience they are seeing something from a major sci-fi filmmaker but it also feels at least a little desperate to avoid giving away plot details while highlighting as much of the action as possible.

Oscar Prospects:

Steven Spielberg returning to a genre that made him famous? The Academy should well eat it up if it’s any good.
