Review: (#1, C+) Michael Jackson at various stages of his career is an interesting way to present the biopic. The lack of background detail may allow the figures to pop but is otherwise rather dull.

(#2, C+) This being the most iconic dance maneuver of the King of Pop, it will have a certain appeal but the overall design seems cheap and showy without being exciting. (#3, C) The same titling but with the iconic jacket from “Thriller.” This is a bit brighter but with lots of wasted space. (#4, C) This also has an iconic Jackson appeal but the lack of background details and focusing on the fog of the stage don’t make for a creative backdrop.

(#5, C-) A lot of wasted empty space in a garish red design that employs the horror-themed color palette without details. (#6-#9, C) Different eras of Jackson’s life and style make for an interesting combination but are individually underwhelming. (#10, C+) This Dolby effort looks good in black-and-white-and-gold but it’s lacking in extra and intriguing details. (#11, C) For IMAX, we’ve got tedious and golden appeal with even fewer details than any of the predecessors. (#12, C) An attempt to create something visually appealing but without a sense of background detail or energy. (#13, C-) Worse than all the rest because it fails to find anything in the realm of style or panache.

Trailer Rating: B / B- / C+

Review: (#1, B) Focusing in on a single segment of the singer’s life for a trailer and cuing music that reminds the viewer of the impact Michael Jackson had on their lives is a near perfect choice. If it looked like a better movie, it might have been a stronger trailer. As it is, the glossy nature of the trailer might not work nearly as effectively as would one that also tackled some of the controversies surrounding the late great performer.

(#2, B-) The spark of the first trailer is largely absent even if it gets into more details about what era the film covers, namely Michael’s start with the Jackson 5 and eventual split from his controlling father to become one of the most successful music acts in history. That biopic feel may help convey what the film is about it feels less magical and exciting than the first trailer.

(#3, C+) You can’t go wrong with the King of Pop’s music in its various forms but there’s so little of the story to be seen that it almost looks like a glorified documentary without a beating heart.

Oscar Prospects:

The dime-a-dozen singer biopics have been largely unsuccessful in replicating the Oscar nominations haul of Bohemian Rhapsody, so I doubt this one, releasing in April, will take much of a shot.
