Synopsis:

From IMDb: “Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick’s song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves.”

Review: (#1-#2, C) This pair of character posters are aggressively colored and predictably crafted. Nick Jonas’ position and expression are hardly convincing though Rudd’s are at least modestly better.

(#3, C) The empty red background, even with the white lettering on top of it simply stands too starkly in the visuals of the poster. It also seems to betray the intent of the first poster. (#4-#5, C) Whether in Portuguese or English, these two posters share a style and it’s not a particularly appealing one. (#6, C) Combining elements of multiple posters and then trying to make them fit together doesn’t work well when the figures don’t seem to be naturally interacting. With that and the ugly background color and title lettering color combination, this effort doesn’t work.

Review: (#1, C) A generic music-related comedy that sets up the premise well but which never creates the kind of laughs and energy that audiences come to expect from their zany War of the Roses-esque conflict stories.

(#2, C) The first trailer made the film seem like a zany comedy that would fit well within Paul Rudd’s wheelhouse. This second trailer makes it feel more like a John Carney musical dramedy that has critical acclaim and might be far more engaging than the type of throwaway comedy Rudd usually takes on. Either way, it creates confusion around the film and while the drama might look good on paper, neither trailer quite sells this film as a worthy effort to see in theaters.
