Synopsis:

From IMDb: “John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back. The most disturbing installment of the Saw franchise yet explores the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s most personal game. Set between the events of Saw I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through devious, deranged, and ingenious traps.”

Review: (#1) Since the audience has come to expect these minimalist designs for the series, there’s really no shocking revelation for how irrelevant they are.

(#2) “Eye” “Heart” “Saw” is an eye-rolling pun, but strangely fitting. The lack of background details is common to the franchise, but seldom welcome. (#3) The tagline likely speaks to plot details, but the Aztec calendar conceit is rather uninspired even if it’s updated with Saw-related elements. (#4 & #5) These bloody figures borrow on a blood drive and design concept the franchise tried some years ago. While interesting, they lack of background details is an issue.

Trailer Rating: B

Review: The trailer is definitively targeted at fans of the series or those who are very familiar with its narrative themes. Reminiscent of one middle chapters of the series, this film might have new traps to tease, but the foundation of the storyline is too derivative.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
