Review: (#1, B+) Plenty of little details that make it feel something like a Star Wars film but it digs into the opposite effect than one would typically expect. It leans heavily into the corny 1940s aesthetic that characterized Werewolf by Night as well, making this feel like a pastiche to the wrong era. Still, the myriad fans of the streaming series are likely to be compelled.

(#2-#3, C) Not much different between these posters except the second is action oriented but neither are visually exciting or do they create motion.

(#4, C) There isn’t much here except Grogu, who will appeal generally even if not specifically for this poster. (#5, C+) Colorful IMAX design doesn’t make for an appealing one. The limited details don’t suggest time or care was taken with the design. (#6, C) No background details but a setting leaps to mind with this poster, which might not be enough implication for fans. (#7, C) Another mediocre format design that blends two colors that don’t work well together in this particular context. (#8, C) Another fail for Dolby. Gone are the giant D’s while suggesting the view of the Mandalorian has its appeal but not its creative necessity. (#9, B) Although it isn’t quite a return to the glory days of Star Wars series poster designs, it has the artistic style and richness even if it lacks the vast details or expansive character displays. (#10, C) Now that we’ve had our break of format designs, let’s go for another that is exceptionally boring. (#11, C) If the red-blue color shift of the earlier design doesn’t appeal to you, this red-green one won’t either. It’s not a Christmas release. (#12, C) This looks like a prior design with a different setting in the background but remains another flop for format designs. (#13, C+) A design with more appealing details so clumsily thrown together that it looks garish and ugly. (#14, C) Red-bluegreen didn’t work and red-green didn’t but red-blue-purple…still doesn’t.

(#15, B+) More akin to the classic Star Wars designs of the past, there is still an unnecessary amount of vacant real estate on the design but there are enough details to make it feel like it’s honoring its history while forging a path forward.

Review: (#1, C+) For those who’ve seen the series, this trailer is superfluous. They’ll already likely know it exists and want to check it out regardless of content. Beyond that, its appeal to unfamiliar audiences will be limited. The action is a bit cheesy, a bit cheap, and fails to excite in a measurable way. Some of the graphics are disjointed and choppy and that’s not going to entice any but the faithful.

(#2, B-) Although it eschews the familiar strains of the John Williams theme, it presents a lot of action and background details that will remind viewers of the Star Wars franchise and build their interest that way. However, there’s not much here to draw in non-fans or people unfamiliar with the show it’s adapted from.

(#3, B) As far as excitement goes, this trailer delivers a lot of it. While it hops around a bit too much, it compares favorably to other films in the franchise, establishing setting in multiple locales, the introduction of tense situations, and a lot of sometimes childish humor. Perfectly fit for this franchise’s biggest fans.
