Review: (#1, C) Limited colors, an inconsequential statue, and indeterminate “sparks” all make for a rather dull start. (#2, C) The gold spinal affectation of his helmet stands out against the other subdued colors but tell the audience precious little about the film itself.

(#3, B-) It’s a simple design but there’s an evocative nature to the horse rearing on its legs in the background. This is, of course, a reference to the emergence of Matt Damon’s character from the belly of the Trojan Horse but with the shading and background glow giving an overwhelming quality to the equine figure, it gives the design some gravitas even when it’s relatively simplistic. And enough with the ember/cinder concepts.

(#4, C+) For those familiar with the mythology, this should be a compelling image. The titling is minimalistic, allowing the visual to do the talking but it doesn’t have the draw of the prior design. (#5, C+) Taking the prior design and adding some action elements makes it stand out a little better but the red infusion to the IMAX branding gives it too much of a pop of color that only draws attention to the overused cinder effects. (#6, B-) What makes this one stand out is its limited color palette. The blacks and blues create an intriguing backdrop to the bright shaft of light at the cave entrance. With that and its fitting highlight of the Dolby logo allows it to work its magic. (#7, C) There’s not much here. All of the style of design #5 is thrown away while the background is made a bit blurrier. The central figure stands out but so too do the bland cinders element.

Review: (#1, B+) Less a teaser and more a clip, this riveting preview gives brief glimpses of the opening sequence of the film wherein Odysseus enacts a daring plan to get behind the walls of Troy with the Trojan Horse. Many are familiar with the concept so getting in media res is a fitting choice. The bar scenes seem intended to add some reference to the events but it isn’t really needed.

(#2, B-) An overlong trailer that doesn’t get too in depth to the journey elements of the Homeric classic but focuses on the two settings of the film, the figure Odysseus and the journey he’s embarking on to get home and the state of the kingdom he abandoned in his quest to defeat the Trojans. This preview seems a bit hollow for most of its length and there’s a clear delineation between the performances of the older actors and the younger with Tom Holland looking particularly bad.

(#3, B) The snippets the audience has gotten so far of the various threats Odysseus will face allows the film to keep many of its scintillating secrets to itself while building up interest in the film. It’s clear from the home-set content that this epic will be expansive and that may please fans of Greek myths but might catch the undereducated quite unaware.

Oscar Prospects:

This will be one of the year’s biggest Oscar contenders and will likely end up the most nominated film at the 99th Oscars.
