Review: (#1, C-) It really looks like the studio just took the video game’s titling and slapped it on a plain black background with a few extra words to stoke excitement. Talk about cheap. (#2, B-) This has a little more visual pizazz than the first design, giving the audience a look at some of the characters from the film but it looks surprisingly static for all the action that’s going on with it. The colors are a bit too bright in places, which enables the blue hues of the design to overwhelm.

(#3, C+) There must be something to this design that would tell the viewer this is a film to get excited about. Perhaps it’s a callback to something in the game itself but I cannot see how this one will get anyone talking. (#4, C+) This will speak more to fans of the game than the prior design with its tip of the cap to the various planets and by including popular Yoshi. Still an underwhelming effort with minimal details.

(#5-#11, B-) These semi-character designs feature lots of unique details, which sets them apart from other such designs but none of them are visually impressive with the excessive sparks of color boosting the design but never making them feel uniquely compelling. (#12, B) All of the characters spreading out in a vertical display that allows for things to spread out a bit but limiting the background details to an almost bland degree.

(#13, B-) Add in another character poster with similar effects. (#14, B-) A cute use of the double-D of Dolby but still an overall inauspicious effort.

Review: (#1, C+) Unless you’ve seen the first film, this entire trailer doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. There are some cool and exciting moments but ultimately it feels like it’s only concerned about drawing existing fans to the theater. It doesn’t quite work as an advertising tool since those folks would likely already have been in attendance.

(#2, C+) The plot is nowhere to be seen. The audience is treated to a series of less-than-hilarious scenes that are meant to generate humor and excitement but feel like half-hearted efforts to get the first film’s fans into seats.

(#3, C+) Speeding through the shots without any of the premise make for a rather boring trailer design.

(#4, C) More of the same, a pointless teaser.

(#5, C) The plot is laid bare for the audience and it’s not likely that they’ll care. Audiences will have already decided by this point whether they are interested or not and this trailer does little to further entice or broaden excitement in the film about to be shown. It is admirable to see so many locations put into a single trailer but that robs the film of some of its potential surprises.

Oscar Prospects:

If the first movie couldn’t score a nomination, its sequel won’t either.
