Review: (#1, B) The feel of a 1970s spy picture, this design has a lot of unnecessarily empty space and, from a distance, almost looks like the crosshairs are forming an umbrella, the effort is clever but could be improved.

Review: (#1, B) Fans of Martin McDonagh will recognize his trademark touches to this dark comedy but that familiarity only supports the director for so long. There are some plot elements that are cribbed from In Bruges but with different stars. He seems to be alternating between the stars of that film and one of his stars of Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri. It also adds a period element that his earlier films don’t quite express but for fans, this should be sufficient to pull them in even if broader audiences won’t be attracted.

Oscar Prospects:

Martin McDonagh is now a Oscar mainstay so we have to expect this to contend. Nominations for its stars is likely but when it shares some similar ideas as his prior In Bruges, I’m not sure if it can bring him the victory he deserves.
