Review: (#1, B-) A pretty medallion with an unfamiliar foundation, this design is a decent tease but doesn’t say much. (#2, B) An imaginative and artistically compelling design that limits the viewer’s attention to the avian elements while minimizing the setting all while overwhelming it all with an oppressive off-white background.

Review: (#1, B+) The story doesn’t quite manifest in an understandable way but the trailer is filled with visual splendor and the kind of excellence in stop-motion animation we expect from Laika. Whether it will appeal to mass audiences or not remains to be seen but those who’ve supported them for two decades, there’s plenty here to whet their appetites.

(#2, A) The musical selection alone lifts this trailer beyond expectations but the gorgeousness of the animation and details in the backdrop play dramatically well against that music and build a compelling story with plenty of action and drama without giving away the entire plot. Perhaps those who aren’t enamored with stop-motion animation can dismiss this trailer but everyone else should be easily impressed by its beauty.

Oscar Prospects:

This is sure to be an Oscar nominee. Laika has too perfect a record for it not to happen. A win is certainly possible with a lot of sequels in the competition this year, though Toy Story 5 will be still competition.
