Review: (#1 & #2) This pair of designs encapsulate a lot of the film’s premise, namely place, character, and setting. While they have a lot going on with them, they are also a bit too simplistic and lacking in grand detail or inventiveness.

Trailer Rating: C+ / C+ / C

Review: (#1) The trailer is intended to make the viewer uncomfortable. A white guy trying to convince his girlfriend’s Black parents that he has the purest intentions. The challenge was making it uncomfortable enough to be funny, but not off-putting. It doesn’t quite land that and the end result is an eye-rolling shrug.

(#2) The first trailer was a bit more purposefully uncomfortable than this trailer, but there’s still plenty to cringe at here, regardless of your background. That said, the lack of substance in these trailers is going to make it difficult to sell the picture to a broad audience who aren’t drawn to the film because it features Eddie Murphy.

(#3) This is less a trailer and more a scene from the film, which robs that particular scene of any salience and overemphasizes its inability to make cringe humor work for more than a few seconds.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
