Opening far higher than anyone expected, Baz Luhrmann’s extravagant rendition of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic The Great Gatsby pulled in over $50 million at the box office over the weekend. While it didn’t come close to usurping the top spot from Iron Man 3, the total is vindication for Luhrmann whose film has been receiving unspectacular reviews from critics.
