I don’t know. I think Bullock excels in the film. Yes it’s strong for her, but it’s evidence she can deliver a solid performance that isn’t based on humor or box office success. She elevates the film to a level that most great actresses do. That we are just now seeing what she can do proves that she has much more to come and I hope she does. In Infamous, she delivers a stellar performance and now she has The Blind Side. I think she has the possibility of becoming a type of Julia Roberts, yet without the ego.
I haven’t seen Julia, but I’ve heard amazing things. I should watch it, it’s on Netflix streaming. It’s just that of the nominees, I think Carey Mulligan’s performance is above and beyond the best. I just think it’s sad she’s not getting more attention.
It’s like awarding Avatar Best Picture because it was so popular with wide audiences and made a lot of money, not because it was the truly “the best” of the year, you know?
Again, I can’t judge Sandra Bullock’s performance, but from what I’ve heard it’s a good performance FOR HER, but nothing truly exceptional.
There are several things at play here. One is that there weren’t any lead female performances that captured everyone’s heart, though why Tilda Swinton in Julia isn’t getting more traction is beyond me.
In years where this happens, personality and perseverance take over. Both Sandy and Meryl have that in spades. Meryl has a truckload of awards, Sandy has none and as he herself says, “this is a fluke”. With Meryl, there’s always another opportunity waiting around the corner.
The Oscar race is still up in the air. Sandy tying Meryl with the Broadcast Critics was the biggest indicator of her popularity. Both winning Globes was expected and Sandy winning the SAG the year after Meryl won her third was pretty much expected as well.
One can’t help but wonder if Sandra Bullock is winning these awards because she DID give the best female performance of the year, or if it’s really because she brings so much money in to Hollywood, and “beloved by all” or something.
