(Update: 6/10/10, 6:52a – Added Wes’ thoughts) We have two new wide releases this week, both derived from popular ’80s productions, The A-Team based on the television series and The Karate Kid a remake of the martial arts action drama. There is one new release to limited markets, the documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. Then there’s a New York/L.A. release in Sundance hit Winter’s Bone.
Consensus
We agree 100% on the following:
Oscar Non-Contenders: The A-Team and Karate Kid
Films We Won’t Be Seeing: Karate Kid

ThoughtsI remain on the fence about the potential quality of the film. I liked the ’80s show well enough, but not sure it will make a good transition, especially when it looks similar in plot to both The Losers and The Expendables (due later this year). |
ThoughtsInteresting director, interesting cast, but tired plot I’ll wait for the reviews. |
ThoughtsThis is an unnecessary remake that looks pretty horrid |
ThoughtsIt might be entertaining, but I’m not interested in watching it at the theater. I’ll put it in my Netflix queue. |

ThoughtsI haven’t been so adamant about not watching a remake as I have been about this one. I find the necessity of a remake pointless. I think their choice of settings and concepts are narrow. I think Jackie Chan is a poor fit. |
ThoughtsRemakes tend to bore me. Jackie Chan tends to bore me. What’s to like? |
ThoughtsThis is an unnecessary remake that looks pretty horrid (do you see a pattern emerging?) |
ThoughtsAn unnecessary remake of a terribly overrated 80s movie. |

ThoughtsWhile I’m still wavering on the necessity of this documentary, the trailer doesn’t make it look too awful, but it’s still a DVD kind of film. |
ThoughtsI don’t like the woman, won’t pay money to further enrich her and her heirs. |
ThoughtsJoan Rivers is a grating personality to me, but the buzz may make me check it out |
ThoughtsI can’t think of anything I’d less like to sit through than a documentary on the most irritating, obnoxious person in the history of showbiz. |

ThoughtsI was initially supportive of the idea of a film shot in my area with a story taking place here, but after I saw the trailer, the stereotyping I saw made me cringe. So, I’m fence-sitting this one until it becomes an Oscar contender, which it could be. |
ThoughtsYou can never rule out a Sundance winner, but when will the rest of the country get the chance to see it? With nothing else so far this year really clicking this could be the first major awards contender in writing and acting. |
ThoughtsSome actors I really like (Garrett Dillahunt, John Hawkes) may make me check it out on Netflix some day, but I am in no rush |
ThoughtsIt’s receiving outstanding reviews and could become a surprise out-of-nowhere contender during the awards season. |
