We have a jam-packed weekend of new releases. Six in total are competing for your dollars, three in wide release and three in limited. The three new wide releases appeal to wildly different audiences: Despicable Me will appeal to the family audience, Predators will appeal to the fanboy crowd and Grease Sing-A-Long will appeal to virtually no one except the film’s fans. The three new limited releases include an Oscar contender (The Kids Are All Right), a foreign horror sequel (Rec 2) and documentary about filmmakers (Great Directors).

Consensus

We agree 100% on the following:
Grease Sing-A-Long: We won’t be singing along.
Rec 2: Not an Oscar contender.

Word is it’s a pretty good film despite a sometimes rote trailer. Still, it’s the only new release we’re likely to catch this week, so hopefully it won’t be as disappointing as last weekend.

Thoughts

Not my cup of tea.

Thoughts

It looks pretty dumb, but with an interesting and appealing cast it may be worth a watch.

Thoughts

It’s getting good enough reviews that it could contend for a Best Animated Feature nomination, but that’s probably as far as it will go at the Oscars. Still, it should be a pretty sizable hit for Universal.

The only Predator I’ve seen is Predator 2 and it was such a shitty film that I can’t imagine ever watching another predator film again.

Thoughts

Good cast, but it’s getting so I can’t tell one of these cartoon inspired romps from another.

Thoughts

A bad looking follow-up to a bad series of movies.

Thoughts

I actually quite enjoyed the original “Predator” film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, but was completely underwhelmed with “Predator 2.” The “Alien vs. Predator” films are barely even worth mentioning. This one could be decent or it could be trash, but either way, I’ll probably check it out on DVD or television.

I have never seen Grease…I know, Blasphemy!, but watching this trailer makes me never want to see it. But with this Rocky Horror Picture Show wannabe event, I have little interest in watching this right now.

Thoughts

Not one of my favorite musicals.

Thoughts

Never one of my favorite movie musicals.

Thoughts

I truly hate “Grease” and see no point in this stupid Sing-A-Long.

I love the cast and the premise appeals to me, but I can’t help but feel that Focus is dumping this in July and will focus on another film for this year’s Oscar derby. Still, if critics can love it and push it to the end of the year with strong support, it could be a contender.

Thoughts

At least three Oscar nominations await, but I have no idea when I’ll get to see it.

Thoughts

The word about this film has been very positive, and it is a great cast with a great-sounding story.

Thoughts

I can see this one competing in all the major categories.

The first film was remade into an American film. I didn’t see either. So, without knowing more about the film, I won’t consider watching the sequel. I might catch up with it some day, but not soon.

Thoughts

A foreign language sequel to a film I’ve never seen. No interest.

Thoughts

Was there actually a Rec 1? I never heard of it.

Thoughts

I wasn’t even aware there was a Rec 1.

Although I think it’s too much about filmmaking to be an Oscar contender, it looks like a very interesting concept but one that only serious cineastes would be interested in.

Thoughts

Sounds like it should be a DVD extra tacked onto one of the films of one of the directors discussed.

Thoughts

This sounds like a great idea, and I am glad they actually got 10 great and interesting directors.

Thoughts

It sounds like the sort of documentary I’d watch on PBS rather than actually paying money to see in the theater. Still, as someone who would like to one day direct films, it could be educational to learn more about the great auteurs of the past.
