Three new wide releases this week. One, Oceans opens Thursday, April 22 (Earth Day). The other two, The Back-Up Plan and The Losers open Friday, April 23. Here’s what we think of this upcoming slate of new releases.
Part of me wants to see it because it seems charming, but another part of me screams that it’s going to be awful. Therefore, if I see it, I will see it on DVD.
Thoughts
Looks like the usual Jennifer Lopez crap.
Thoughts
This film looks horrific.
Thoughts
It looks terrible. Plus, I generally tend to hate anything starring Jennifer Lopez.
This is one of those quirky action films that my friends tend to like and since nothing else opening this weekend really appeals to me, it will be quite likely that this will be the feature we end up at on Sunday.
Thoughts
The trailer gave me a headache, I shudder to think what the film itself would do.
Thoughts
I think Zoe Saldana is a blockbuster star waiting to burst, and I wouldn’t mind seeing her in this role, but I avoid these Guy Ritchie-esque action films like the plague.
Thoughts
It looks pretty cliche and the ads haven’t been particularly engaging. I might catch it on HBO if there’s nothing else on, but otherwise I’ll skip it.
Although I enjoyed Earth last year, this trailer left me unimpressed. And since my one friend who saw both this and March of the Penguins with me hasn’t expressed an interest in seeing it, then it’s probably not going to happen. As for my thoughts on its Oscar chances: Disney’s previous big screen doc, Earth wasn’t even an Oscar finalist.
Thoughts
Looks like a perfectly acceptable documentary to run across on TV, but it’s nothing I would go out of my way to see.
Thoughts
I am not a nature documentary fan, but if this is successful enough it could sneak in at the Oscars in some of the minor categories.
Thoughts
Just like “Earth” last year, it’s a cheap cash-in from Disney to exploit Earth Day. All of its footage is piecemealed together from BBC’s superior “Planet Earth” documentary, so if you’ve seen that, then there’s no reason to watch this.
